How to Market a Restaurant with no Money

One of the questions I get all the time is I don’t have any money. How can I market my restaurant? Well, the good news for you is that you’re doing this at the absolute best time to be broke in marketing a restaurant. The tools are there for you and they are cheap. In fact, the most effective tools are in fact free. I would highly encourage you to really understand social media.

If you think about what marketing is, marketing is simply a process of getting a message to a customer. Like if you watched your competitors at some of these big chains over the years, they craft a very finely-tuned message for a very specific person and they whispered in their ear all the time. Now those companies have been spending a fortune using radio, television, Yellow Pages, and newspaper advertising to get that message across because they are doing it en masse. The good news for you is you can target your customers.

You can target customers in your area. You don’t have to broadcast a message all over a huge city when you know that only a certain area of people are actually going to come to your area and go to restaurants. So, you have the ability now with things like Facebook literally to go in there for just pennies and target a certain given zip code and say, I would only like to show this message to people in this zip code, or in this certain area, or in this city. So your marketing dollars a well-spent, but even if you don’t have the money to spend on ads in Facebook or Google AdWords, you have plenty of freebies in terms of getting Facebook likes, communicating with your customers on Facebook, on Twitter, on Pinterest, on all of the social media platforms, but the most important thing is to remember that you are not advertising to them.

The reason that those companies use advertising mediums and blasted messages at their customers is that was a broadcast medium. It was not QA People fully expect that these new social media platforms are two way. You have to have a conversation and really try to understand that you’re not just talking at them.

Nobody likes to be talked at. Imagine you’re sitting in a room with a whole bunch of people and you start, Blahhh, here’s my message, and then you turn around and walk away. They look at you like crazy? You need to craft your messages, so that they are conversational, so that you can strike up a conversation. You’re trying to make friends with these people.
